Summary
The morning after James Norrington leaves Tortuga with Elizabeth Swann and Jack Sparrow, he wakes up on the Black Pearl.
“James? It’s Elizabeth. Are you awake?”
He forced his eyes open just enough to look up at her face. Elizabeth knelt next to him, wearing a man’s coat and hat. Her hair drifted down past her face in gentle waves, and her eyes held both sympathy and concern. “You had a rough night,” she said. “I don’t know how much you remember, but you’re with me on the Black Pearl.”
If he weren’t so miserable, James might have laughed at how absurd his situation was. Here he was—hungover, sailing under a pirate captain, with Elizabeth Swann. He didn’t really know what the pirates were doing or where they were going, but he supposed he’d find out eventually. He didn’t particularly care anyway. Simply being on a ship—even a pirate ship—was like a taste of his old life, and infinitely preferable to the gutters and seedy taverns of Tortuga.
