He could have sworn that one of those creatures had punctured his eardrum and still hadn’t healed, because he just couldn’t believe what he’d heard.
He opened his mouth and closed it, his panting breath coming back in full force, disbelief and shame – he felt his cheeks burning, thank you – and he realized he wasn’t really saying anything.

"What happened to him?" Sarah pointed to Bucky, who slept practically wrapped up in Sam's sweatshirt, he had that expression that he had an empty sleep with no sign of a nightmare. Sam grunted and dragged his fingers along the brown's shore.
“Walker said some shit. I had to help him organize some screws. ”
Sarah shook the screwdriver she was holding. She knew Bucky's past well enough to know that he didn't sleep peacefully often. Then she pointed at her brother on the boat threateningly.
"Come in soon or it will be late, and I hope you have assured him that you can stay, Sam Wilson."
"Yes ma'am." At the very least, when Sam rocked Bucky's body gently to get up, his hazy expression and disheveled hair was at least fucking cute.
OR
Bucky Barnes deserves to be loved and protected, and Sam will give him exactly that and receive the same in return.
