    Summary

“What are you going to do,” Zhou Zishu asks, reprovingly.

Kill them. What is vengeance, after all, but a desperation of care.

“I’m going to change your bandages,” Wen Kexing says. It’s not what either of them means. He smooths his face over with a smile so innocent it’s predatory. “Aren’t you lucky, to have such a good-looking nurse.”

“Let it be, Lao Wen,” Zhou Zishu warns, gently. “We’re all here. It’s not nothing.”

Wen Kexing cares for Zhou Zishu's wounds.

    Summary

“What’s next?” Wen Kexing finds that he doesn't want to know, but he asks anyway.

“Scent, touch, hearing, and then sight.”

He pulls Zhou Zishu’s face down to his neck. “What’s this smell?”

“Um, the green bottle with the cork—no, the agate stopper—on the stool next to the bathtub.”

Wen Kexing lets him go, reassured at least by that. He thinks for a while, and needles out, “So all this time, I’ve been cooking for someone who can’t even taste the hard work I put in.”

    Summary

He couldn’t find anything in Wen Kexing’s body that should be keeping him from waking; it stood to reason that it was his mind that was the problem. Zhou Zishu probably knew Wen Kexing’s mind as well as anyone else alive or dead, and he doubted it was straightforward. So he read about the techniques of Healer Valley, and held Wen Kexing’s wrist or his hand or his cool cheek. The prevailing theory was that the best way to settle a person’s mind for them was in dreams. After all, wasn’t it dreams that told the truth when nothing else would?

Zhou Zishu wasn’t sure that was true. And he didn’t imagine that Wen Kexing would appreciate having his secrets dragged into the light that way. But frankly it was his own fault; it wasn’t as though he’d left Zhou Zishu any choice. If Wen Kexing would only wake up, he would welcome his complaints.

How long does it take to learn that they're well beyond the question of what a person does or doesn't deserve? Deserving joy, deserving pleasure—what about it?

They have them. Wen Kexing has swallowed so many things down in the name of survival. He can swallow happiness too. He's strong enough.

    Summary

“You can go on, if you want,” he said when Zhou Zishu stopped for breath. “Scold and punish me for seven years, then I will scold you for the next seven, and then we’ll have to find something else to do.”

The thought of years took any other words out of his mouth. Zhou Zishu had gotten used to measuring time in thimblefuls. A New Year’s day, a drift of peach blossoms blown off the trees: each one, perhaps, the last he would see. There wasn’t a container in his mind big enough to hold years, decades, centuries.
