Summary
Will has been so worried that Mike would pick up on his strange behavior, considering his newfound fondness for the other boy. Will has always been scared. His father used to call him cruel words because of his sensitive demeanor. If his father ever found out what he was, he was sure he would actually murder him. He wants to tell mike. But he doesn't want to hurt el. His sister. It's still a bit hard to grasp that concept for will. With Mike, he feels the most safe with. He knows Mike would accept him. At least not hurt him like the stupid bullies at school would. But there was always that lingering doubt in him. The “what if?”. He wasn't ready. But he didn't have much longer. Summary
“We’re still best friends, Will,” Mike says, voice a bit choked up. “At least… at least to me. And that means…” He falters, looking for the right words. “It means I’ll stay by your side,” and he sounds sure of himself now—as if he was stating a fact, as if Will was supposed to know that already.
Will can’t handle this. His fight-or-flight instinct is kicking in, but he has no energy left in him to keep fighting. He feels tired—tired of hoping for more, more, more, and even more exhausted of thinking he might actually get it. He feels selfish with greed, with his want for more.
And as if all that wasn’t bad enough, Mike adds, “Forever.”
OR: Three years after defeating Vecna, Mike and Will reunite and have a long overdue conversation.

Summary
“What was that?” Will asks, tilting his head and narrowing his eyes at Mike.
“What was what?” Mike asks, feigning innocence as he looks anywhere but at Will’s eyes. Instead, he reaches out his hand for Will’s cigarette.
Will sighs and hands it over, crossing his arms across his chest as he continues to stare at Mike. Mike lifts the cigarette to his lips, taking a long drag as he starts to sweat under Will’s gaze.
“Were you jealous?” Will finally asks, tone equal parts incredulous and amused.
Mike chokes on the smoke in his lungs, coughing out his surprise as he turns away from Will. “I’m not– why would I be–” Mike finally finishes coughing, rubbing at his chest to try to ease the ache in his lungs. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he croaks.
“Oh, yeah that was so convincing, Wheeler.”

Summary
“Soo,” Will begins, “was it an okay first day? Meeting everyone and stuff, I mean. Like, are you still okay with spending Christmas here?”
“If I’m okay with- are you kidding?! I’m totally looking forward to it!” Mike responds, almost exasperated. He’s sitting up now, facing Will.
“Yeah?” Will prompts, also sitting up.
“Definitely. Your family is like, the nicest people ever and I- well I’m, uh, I’m pretty happy to get to spend Christmas with you too so… there’s that.” Mike says, smile turning a bit shy. His voice goes soft as he says the last part and Will feels like there’s something there. It feels almost like a confession.

Summary
‘Sure,’ Will says, a mix of sceptical and amused. ‘Um—thanks? I miss you too.’
The words send a restless flurry through Mike’s stomach, something that feels suspiciously like butterflies, or moths—justice for moths, okay—and it’s not so bad. The warmth that shoots through his body isn’t so bad, either, and even though it’s two days until winter starts, he’s now hot all over. Not necessarily in the itchy, humid way he gets during the summer, but a comforting way, like a warm blanket or a hug, and he—God, he misses Will.
Mike really needs to get a hold of himself over that.
// or, mike is, in fact, the disaster in question.
