“Wolfwood.” Vash sighed, stopping the man with his voice. “It’s barely ‘rain’. It’s more like a few drops of water, mixed with sand, and a lot of wind.” He pointed at the approaching wall of clouds. “As fun as sand is, the nearest shower is four days back the way we came.”
“How convenient that the farm is so close.” Wolfwood muttered, eyeing Vash suspiciously. “Now, are you sure you’re not making this up to get me alone in a secluded place?” His teeth shined as a grin split his face.
“Why would I do that when I know a couple of drinks is all you need?” Vash gave him a proud smile.
“‘Cause it’s cheaper that’s why!” Wolfwood punched him on his arm.
Or: It 'rains' and Vash is smitten.

Summary
Vash and Wolfwood take on a job: fix a stranger's car on the edge of a desert town, collect the money, and move on. They work in near silence, talking only about bolts and wiring, both pretending that everything is normal — except that nothing has been normal for a long time. When the sun begins to tip toward the horizon, Wolfwood asks a simple question about the future, and it slowly turns into a conversation about what kind of person you'd want beside you. Before either of them realizes it, they're both dangerously close to saying out loud what neither of them has dared to say before.

Summary
The door is flung open almost instantly by the kid Wolfwood remembers from over a year back the first time he saw her. She looks near-identical to how she did back then, except she’s shot up about half a foot and her face has hardened at the edges, wear present that wasn’t there the first time, undoubtedly brought about by the Age of Chaos.
All of that age drains out of Lina’s face when she lays eyes on Vash, though, and he catches her readily when she pitches herself at his chest. It’s a natural conclusion that the two will stay with her and her grandmother for the duration of their stay in this part of town. They can’t stay for long, of course; Vash still has a generous bounty on his head thanks to those damned Earth Federation soldiers, and even with his hair black and tied out of his face with a ribbon, he tends to stand out in a crowd. Maybe something to do with the fact that he easily towers over most humans, stands even a couple inches above Wolfwood when his posture is at its best…
