Summary
Nagisa Shiota feels through hurting himself. Karma Akabane feels through hurting others. They're numb, so it's only natural for them to connect, as unhealthy as that friendship may turn out to be. Nagisa struggles to balance school, the weight of his mother's expectations and disappointment in him, and a job consisting of selling his body so he can earn enough money to get out of that godforsaken house. Moreover, he's forced to compartmentalize his extreme mental illness, the trauma of losing his father, and the trauma of dealing with his mother's grief of losing his father. Karma, on the other hand, attempts to suppress his attachment to the other, both unadjusted to and terrified of the idea of caring about another human being. With the constant need for violence and the persistent emptiness of his parents' absence, he fails to warm up to the vulnerable idea of mutual affection.
While the two scramble to hold each other together, Gakushuu Asano is separately cracking under the expectations of his many unwanted roles, as the principal's son, the head of the student council, and captain of the soccer team, and resorts to idiotic coping mechanisms and friendships that could ruin his social life if discovered.

Their blood mixed, varying shades of crimson smearing over the sickly backdrop of their complexions and spilling from their skin, dying the tile beneath them red. It felt disgusting, slimy and unsanitary, but nice, almost romantic, in a way. He was connecting with the one he loved, despite how degenerate the full context of the situation was.
It was Saihara's suggestion, and Ouma wasn't sure if that was surprising or not, but clearly he was just as sick, considering he agreed.
