A pale shaft of light, as thin and straight as a spear, slipped from the sky. The demon hissed as it drew closer.
“Corbis!” Axias howled, swinging the broadsword against the lashing tail. “To the gates! Pull them back to the gates!”
But the gates were shimmering, shining, and the air sang with divine magic, and at the centre of it all, a fragile woman stood with arms outstretched to the heavens to receive the plunging comet of light.
It burst over her, fizzing and sparking and swelling, and the brightness grew in intensity. Rieta’s mouth was pitched wide in a cry, but nothing could be heard, not over the moving of air and matter as light seemed to shine through the particles of all things.
She cried out and flung the light toward the creature.
