It had only been just over a month since she had moved from Purgatory into the city to take up a teaching position at the university while she worked on her PhD, but she already felt far removed from her old life. It had been something of a whirlwind so far, her weekdays spent trying to find her feet in a new job and juggling her workload with her studies. Her weekends, however, had followed a similar pattern to the one she was currently in the midst of: holed up alone in her apartment, eating in front of the TV.
Keen to branch out and make new friends in an unfamiliar place, Waverly decides to join a walking group. A group which just so happens to be led by one Nicole Haught...

“Beautiful,” Waverly breathed, eyes fixed on the book in front of her as she ran her hand gently, reverently over it. She traced her finger carefully over the gilt lettering on the cover then down the spine, noticing with pleasure its fine condition despite its age. This was often her favourite part, the anticipation before the book was opened and the treasure within was revealed. As she slowly opened the cover, she took a deep breath, relishing that old book smell that she loved so much. Inside, the paper was stained, spots of damp in places, but there in the top right hand corner of the front endpaper was what she was looking for.

Nicole Haught knew she would never forget the first time that she saw Waverly Earp. Unsurprising, really; it wasn’t every first meeting that involved helping a stranger out of her beer-soaked shirt in the middle of a deserted bar.
Every part of Waverly’s first meeting with Nicole seemed to be seared into her brain. She still cringed to think of how she’d somehow managed to get caught in her shirt, let alone why she’d decided it was a good idea to take it off in front of a complete stranger in the first place.
