“I know, sweetie,” his mother says, reaching over to him to pet his hair softly. “You should try and get out of the house, soon.” Nai opens his mouth to tell her his work schedule, but she interrupts him. “And do something other than work. You should call Nicholas.”
Nai makes a face. He doesn’t know why everyone is bringing up Nico. Sure, he supposes they’re friends, but Nico was more Vash’s friend than his. Nai doubts he’ll want to hang out without him. “Why does everyone keep telling me to call Nico? He’s barely my friend!”
His mother gives him a look that he can’t decipher. Then, she sighs. “Just promise me you’ll try, okay?”
OR: with Vash away at school, Nai finds something, or someone, that he was looking for, along with a lot of things he didn't expect along the way.

Nai reaches over to gently take Vash’s arm, pulling his hand up on the table to lace their fingers together. It’s a testament to Vash’s nerves that he lets him do that in public. “Why the fuck did you start dating a fighter if you can’t handle the fights?”
“Because I never learn my fucking lesson,” Vash says with a squeeze to his fingers that makes his bones ache. He settles back, though, the tension draining from his shoulders. “It was fun, at first. Until I got attached.”
Nai looks back to the ring, where Wolfwood lands a thigh kick that nearly brings his opponent to his knee. He rubs his thumb over Vash’s callused knuckle. “Is it serious?”
He doesn’t meet Vash’s eye when Vash glances over at him. Vash sighs, and says, softly, resigned: “Terminal.”
