Summary
Back when Verso still believed himself to be just another face in Lumière’s crowd, he was becoming quite impatient with waiting for his soulmate to appear so they could bring colours into each other’s lives. It wasn’t really that much about the colours themselves, music brought the depth into the world for Verso, but he wanted someone to write the melodies for.
Then, Verso learnt the truth and knew that, in a world where no one was supposed to go through life alone, he was a fake made to exist without anyone to complete his soul.
It’s more than half a century later when fate mocks him again.

When Gustave starts noticing the cracks in the illusion, in particular the scars on her hands and his memories of the Stone Wave Cliffs, it's a sign to Verso that she doesn't have long before staying in the Canvas kills her..and they need to act soon if they're going to save her life.

Or, the Maelle ending, but its been a few years, and Maelle is slowly dying both inside the Canvas and in the real world outside. She's no longer able to hide the little mistakes from Gustave, and her hold on his memories that's kept him happy and complacent is fading.
