Annabeth understood this the way she understood load-bearing walls and weight distribution. The enmity was structural. It held things up. You did not remove it without understanding what it was holding.
She was twelve years old, and she understood it perfectly, and she was certain she would never have cause to think about it differently.
Then a boy arrived.
He was blonde and blue-eyed and looked like he had lost a fight with a lawnmower, and he was unconscious, and he smelled, unmistakably and impossibly, of the deep ocean.
Annabeth stood in the doorway of the infirmary and looked at him for a long moment. Something in her went very still in the way that things go still right before something large and irreversible happens — the held breath before the earthquake, the instant of silence before a wave breaks.
She did not name the feeling. She was twelve. She was the pride of her mother. She was going to be great.
She turned and walked away.
It would not be the last time she would try.

Summary
Annabeth had predicted something like this happening. Something something her and Luke fucking in her room (in reverse cowgirl because he loves when she’s on top,) something something them not hearing Percy’s keys in the door (because they’re playing that stupid making love playlist Luke insists they play every time,) something something Percy opening her bedroom door to ask to eat her leftovers (falafel pita with amba and tahini from Mimi’s, duh,) something something him getting an eyeful of her tits, and her freshly waxed landing strip, right down to where it disappears just over where she’s riding Luke. (Like a champ, for your information, like the greatest goddamn porn star of all time.)
Not only had Annabeth predicted it, she's sort of been waiting for it. So really, the most surprising part about all this is that Percy has suddenly found it in his heart to ask to eat her food. If you look at it from that angle—well, she’s kind of touched.

“Don’t go home with him.”
The decidedly male voice made her jump. Her eyes snapped open and snagged on the rumpled reflection of Teddy Lupin. His warm hazel eyes were fixed on her with a startling intensity.
“You shouldn’t be in here,” she said, trying her best not to sound as nervous as she felt. “This is the ladies.”
“Don’t go home with him,” he said again.
Anger flared in her belly and she whirled toward him. He had some nerve.
“I don’t believe it’s any of your business who I choose to take home,” she said sharply. “You should be more concerned with your own date. You know, the woman climbing all over you?”
It was meant to be a jibe, but she hated how desperate and jealous it sounded.
“I don’t want her,” Teddy said, eyes still trained intently on her.
Or: Hermione knows she shouldn’t be lusting after the DMLE’s newest Junior Auror, who also happens to be her best friend’s godson. When she tries to get over her wildly inappropriate crush by getting under another wizard, Hermione fails spectacularly. Instead, she finds out exactly what she’s been missing when Teddy Lupin corners her in the loo and shags her senseless.
