Summary
On New Year’s Day, Haiji reflects on what it takes to make a dream come true.
It starts with the slightest flutter in Haiji’s chest when their eyes meet. Kakeru looks at him all the time. It didn’t surprise him before. Kakeru was searching for answers in him the same way that everyone else on the team was looking to him. But it’s when everything else is stripped away after crossing the finish line and Haiji knows that he has nothing more to offer – neither ability to run nor promises to enlighten anyone – does he begin to realise that Kakeru is still looking at him.
And that’s when he starts to realise just how much this feeling has nothing to do with the Ekiden and everything to do with Kakeru.

One year on, Kakeru and Haiji spend the night together.
Haiji opens his eyes as Kakeru draws back, watching as his dark eyes catch the light, shimmering like the first star Haiji had seen that night. Even now, Kakeru is dazzling. He thinks Kakeru might lean in to kiss him again, but instead, he turns his head, lips landing softly on his cheek while his hand slides down to his neck, fingers resting gently on his pulse.
