Summary
Busted Saddles is the best honky tonk bar in town, if you ask Katya. Of course, it’s one of only two in her small Tennessee town. The other, unaffectionately called the Wasteland but whose proper name is Duckie’s, is filled with lonesome cowboys crying into their tequila and writing songs about their lovers one state over in Kentucky, and Katya isn’t about to become one of them.
She suddenly has the frightening thought that she’s one shitty poem away from joining their ranks and catches up with Pearl, who’s been two steps ahead of her this whole time.

When Katya, a counsellor with a long history of her own mental health struggles, decides to go on a yoga retreat in the heart of the Joshua Tree desert, she knows she's in for a big spiritual and emotional overhaul. What she doesn't expect is to meet Trixie Mattel, a chaotic, country Barbie fantasy with a wicked sense of humour and seemingly unlimited patience. As the two get to know each other, Katya discloses her past and, with the help of her fellow yogis, starts to let go of all the things that have troubled her for so long.

Summary
The moment she stepped out of that bus station and onto the street, one large suitcase, a backpack, and a worn-out guitar case in hand, she could feel everything change. It was a cliche to say the least, and Trixie knew that she was the classic farm girl who had hopped on a bus from Milwaukee to Chicago with big dreams and little to no idea of how to make them reality.
She was running, both towards and away from the things she loved most, the things she was most afraid of.

Summary
In fifteen minutes of walking in the yellow-orange blaze of the late-night, Trixie learns of Katya’s most imminent personal growth goals.
She wants to relearn the violin this summer, after years of no practice. She wants to convince her family that she didn’t make a mistake six months ago when she quit her job teaching at the French Cultural Center in Boston and moved to comedy’s mecca to start her life over (supplemented by tutoring at UIC and waitressing). She wants to be a better home cook and move into a nice apartment. She wants to get a dog. Most of all, she wants to make friends here so she isn’t lonely anymore.
(Trixie is a sound tech for various stand-up showcases all over Chicago. Enter Katya, a bright light of dark humor in a sea of bad comedic timing.)

Summary
In the following weeks Katya had scoured every issue of the New York Times for Mattel’s review. She had given up hope after several months with disappointment sitting heavily in her stomach. Mattel apparently had no thoughts on Katya’s food, not enough to even warrant writing anything. It’s worse than knowing Trixie hates her cooking. Then Katya could agree to disagree and get over her stupid schoolgirl crush. She’s no idiot, she knows that that’s what this is. The most persistent crush of her life. It doesn’t help that Trixie is an absolute doll with a figure to die for and a voice that Katya can feel directly between her legs.
It’s fine. She is 48 years old, and she doesn’t need Trixie Mattel’s validation. It’s fine.
Trixie Mattel is the most feared food critic in the country, and Katya will defend her from anybody implying she's a bitch. Except that Trixie actually is a bit of a bitch, and Katya loves it.

Summary
Trixie has always had a painful down and out handsomeness, courtesy of a misfortune streak that is wide as the day is long. She makes it work for her though, she looks good dressed in black and her voice sounds the sweetest when she’s singing sad songs. And for someone as young as she is, she knows her way around a funeral, which is a rather morbid skill to have, but for Katya, especially in her current state— she’s perfect.
