Cruel joke upon cruel joke piled atop each other under the disguise of destiny and fate, until the curtains fell on him and Solas with their blades piercing the other's heart. It was a disgustingly poetic end.

“Hawke?” Varric asks, voice tight.
The mage starts at the sound of his name, wide eyes shooting over to Varric. It’s almost as if he’s only just remembered he wasn’t alone. Some distantly familiar expression flickers over Hawke’s face when their eyes meet - the fear is still there, but it’s broken momentarily by something soft and uncertain.
“Just like old times, yeah?” he jokes. The smile he attempts doesn’t reach his eyes.
The sickly, ever-shifting green light of the Fade casts shadows across Hawke’s face, making him look just as beaten down as he had that final year in Kirkwall. Varric’s chest tightens further at the sight.
“Yeah,” the dwarf returns, turning to look back at the Nightmare. It has moved fully between their party and the rift now, rows of insect-like legs shifting restlessly in the ankle-deep water. “Shit.”
