“I was forcing you to act without seeking my approval,” he said.
“Well,” she shot back, her tail giving an agitated snap against the roots behind her, “you succeeded.”

For a moment, he thought he couldn't breathe. That Tamtey, being so close, had taken all the air out of his lungs with just one question, which had placed him against that invisible wall he always put between them.

He lied again. And Tamtey laid her ears back again.
