Summary
Shouto was 3 when he became a big brother for the first time. Though the memory is foggy, he clings to the shimmers of that day as tightly as one clings to a raft at sea.
He saw Mama in the white hospital bed, holding two little blankets, one pink, one blue. He called out to her and she smiled with the prettiest smile in the whole world because that's his Mama and she's okay.
(With age though, he realised just how exhausted her smile was, just how dull her eyes were, just how much pain she was in-but through it all, she held Natsuo and Fuyumi safely)
He scrambled up the bed, begging her to let him hold his little siblings. She laughed and said he was too small to hold them, but he could see them.
Their faces were all red and smushy. They had white hair, like Mama and him. They were ugly and gross and silly.
He loved them at first sight.
"I'll protect them, no matter what Mama!"
Everything he has done since that day has been for Natsuo, Fuyumi, Touya and Yukiko. His whole world. His younger siblings.
This is the story of how Shouto Todoroki protected his family... and was saved by his Hero, too.

Shouto looks up at him again. He feels strange now, laying on the floor while Midoriya looks down at him, face now unreadable. He pulls his hands away, sits up, and takes a deep breath before answering.
“My fire,” he says, and his voice is too shaky. He swallows, hoping it will bring calm. “I know how to use it, but only just. And for so long, I didn’t want to. I had this incredible power at my literal fingertips…”
“...and you couldn’t bring yourself to use it,” Midoriya finishes.

Kaminari had been feeling off all day. He woke up feeling dizzy and feverish with a headache and a stomachache, but he made it through the school day without anything bad happening. Usually when he was stressed, the telltale signs of incoming sickness was his body’s way of telling him to slow down. It was cold/flu season, however, so Kaminari wasn’t sure if he was just overworked or if he was actually sick.
When he got back to the dorms and began to work on homework, he quickly figured out that no, it was not just stress; Kaminari was sick.
Really sick.

Shouto turned around quickly, wondering what warranted that, only to see his teacher with a tray of two plates holding still steaming, fluffy pancakes.
"Banana pancakes!" Eri cheered in awe, clearly having been subject to this dessert before. She accepted the tray with eager hands and carefully balanced it on the blanket. "Thank you!"
OR: Shouto wasn't expecting to have pancakes with his teacher and Eri at midnight, but. Here they were.

Sometimes, when things fall apart, it's insidious.
Sometimes, it's exponential. Sometimes, once it starts, it seems like the hits never stop. That no matter how many pieces of tape are put over the leak, it keeps growing.
After months of quiet following All-might's retirement, the league interrupts the 2A festival and normalcy falls to the past.
The three words Izuku had planned to say at the festival never come.
A different three words shake the arena, shattering Shouto's world, sending everything he held behind thick walls to spill out into the open.
Dominos fall in rows, drowning young heroes in their consequences. Black and white fade to murky grey.
Fledgling heroes are forced to take flight, supporting the weight of a crumbling profession on their developing spines.
Shouto finds the journey back to "normal" is a lot longer than its fall. Finds that destruction tells you what bonds will weather blood, sweat and tears. Which ones are coal waiting to press into diamonds.

Aizawa looked him in the eye, placed a gentle hand around his bicep (not like Endeavor, his father had only ever touched him with the intention to burn) and asked, “Are you okay?”
People don’t usually ask him things. They like to tell him things, like where to sit or what to wear or how to talk or how to be a hero or how to be himself.
‘Am I okay?’ He thought. He realized he doesn’t ask himself things, either.
Shouto didn’t have an answer to Aizawa’s question, so instead he said:
“A very long time ago, my mother did something....highly upsetting.” The boy was tracing the outline of his scar, his calloused finger stopping and jumping around the bumps and ridges of the burnt skin. “Something today reminded me of that.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” His teacher asked.
“No.”
“Okay. I’m here when you do. I’m always here, kid.” Shouto only responded with a sob. He felt as if he’d earned that right after all the emotional labor he had been put through tonight.
