Summary
Ray looks back at the notebook on the desk, perched on the edge innocently, like it’s mocking him. In the corner of his vision he sees Pete and Art chatting innocuously, Olson cussing them out or talking about naked ladies, Barkovitch bounding several paces ahead just to look back and taunt them. The Major spewing some vapid chauvinistic nonsense about ballsacks. Pete, resplendent in the early morning light, something so old and so, so tired in his dark brown eyes. Ray wonders if it’s possible to be haunted by somebody who’s still alive.
I shot a man in Reno, Johnny Cash croons from his mother’s old jukebox in the living room, just to watch him die.
The Long Walk, he tries again.
The Long Walk was the worst five days of my life. It was also the happiest I’ve ever been.

Ray lives, having escaped at the last second when Pete shot the Major. A year passes. Pete begins to spearhead a revolution and Ray can’t leave him and the Walk behind.

They’ve been working up to this. Ray’s never been with anyone before Pete, but goddamn does he want to be with Pete. He finally gets it. Why people go crazy and do stupid shit in the name of love and sex. Because Ray, well Ray would die for the boy underneath him. But Ray is also a mess of anxiety and self-loathing, still unsure as to why Pete would want me. Two conflicting natures that make Ray want to run away and also want to never be not touching Pete again. So, they’ve been working up to this.
