Summary
Open wide, bite down, a familiar process to him now years later, teeth sinking into soft putty, the mold pressing up against Shane’s soft palate and always drawing a tear from his eye, a suppressed gag from his throat. Saliva stringed when they pull the mold from his mouth, silvery glistening and wet when it snaps and clings to his chin again. The corners of his mouth hurt, dry and stretched taut from the intrusion. He’s pavloved by the feeling. Something thick and warm was there once too, stretching him just as wide. Shane pretended not to notice the pause the dentist gave when examining the back of his throat, undoubtedly eyeing the purple-red bruising there. Shane sent a private thanks to God, or the parliament, or Hippocrates, for the concept of doctor-patient confidentiality.

Summary
“Tilt down,” Ilya ordered, soft but firm, and Shane obeyed, lowering his eyes to the grass as Ilya trimmed the nape of his neck. His hair clippings fell to the soft grass beneath his feet. Feeling Ilya’s intent grip, the way he guided him into position, tilting him to where he needed, making smooth passes and going back over and over the same tracks to make sure he didn’t miss any spots, Shane couldn’t help but feel like a thing. A treasured thing, a prized possession, something lovingly maintained. At some point he let his eyes slip closed, relaxing into Ilya’s hands, slumping down and letting himself be made small, feel owned, warmed by the glow of Ilya’s careful attention.

Summary
An angel. Shane's stomach flipped (or did it drop?) at such a tender comparison. On nights like these where everything was fast and Rozanov played rough with him, he half-expected something filthy, "whore", maybe, "slut," sharp Russian consonants that stung as deliciously as a slap to the meat of his cheek. Shane glowed, molten. With Rozanov's seed painting his red cheeks, he had seldom felt so debauched, and yet the man above him called him an angel.

Summary
"Look, I wasn't sure how to bring this up," Shane started, putting his voice into a different register, the register he uses when he knows he's about to get what he wants, all breathy and a little whiny. A dirty little trick. "But I don't think I have the money to pay you this week, but you know I'm good for it."
"You're good for it?" Ilya asked, and he's fallen into his role seamlessly. In another life he would have been a thespian, he thought. "I don't think this will work for me," he said, taking a menacing step towards Shane who is doing all he can to keep a giddy little smile off his lips. Not the best scene partner, admittedly. But he's got the spirit.
"No?" he quivered out.
"No. I don't think so." Ilya took another bite of his popsicle and tried not to break character by wincing at the brain freeze. "I have bills to pay, you know. And I spend extra time making your yard look perfect," Ilya gestured over his shoulder with the popsicle stick at the wobbly, imperfect mower lines in the grass. "and now I might not get paid? No. That won't work for me."
Shane's eyes widened under his sunglasses, lips cherry red, bitten and juice-stained. "Could we come to some kind of arrangement?"

Summary
"Would you still want to do this?" Ilya asked, pulling Shane from his spiral. "With me?"
The unspoken, "If we're discovered, if they kick us out of the league, if it means we can never play hockey again, if it means you could never play hockey again," hung between them.
In Ilya's eyes, something new sifted to the surface, something Shane had never seen in him before. Unguarded, vulnerable, a young boy asking, "Are you as scared as I am? Will you jump if I jump? Can you hold my hand as I do it?"
