Or a low-grade irritation, a toxic mist he had to work round the clock to contain to a single room. Shane wasn’t supposed to see any of it.

Ilya watches his fingers fiddle with it. “Hear what? Hear us sleep?” he scratches behind his own ear, helpfully. “I snore so loud?”
“No, Ilya, they can hear us not sleep,” Shane leans forward, searching Ilya’s face. Almost. “What we do before we sleep.”
And Shane knows he gets it, because his whole face lights up, and Shane isn’t really in the position to appreciate it fully because the context is just not allowing him to. And it makes him feel worse. “Ah, that!” Ilya is laughing, and he presses down on Shane’s neck more solidly, shaking him around a little, almost proud if Shane had to guess.

Ilya’s about to ask what’s so funny, but then he feels a pressure against his groin and understands: he’s been had. It was a tactic to distract him, and it worked-- Shane’s snuck his other foot up to press against the tented fabric of Ilya’s sweatpants.
“You play dirty.”
“No I don’t.”
“I am going to tell everyone, Shane Hollander is a-” Ilya inhales sharply as Shane flexes his foot once, pressing the ball against Ilya’s dick unfairly, “-cheater. They will disqualify you from the league.”
Shane laughs again, the sound smug in a way that makes Ilya feel a little light headed, like he knows that he’s got Ilya exactly where he wants him and that Ilya is more than happy himself to be there. “Yeah, right.”

The very second he puts the car into park, Ilya places a hand on top of his. Shane glances over at him. Ilya is smiling cheek to cheek.
“What?” he asks, unable to stop himself from smiling too. “You’re staring.”
“Sorry,” Ilya keeps staring, keeps grinning. “So happy.”
Shane and Ilya take their honeymoon. They learn each other better, and love each other in public for the first time.
