A centuries-old vampire currently going by the name of Moriarty has been comfortably running the city's criminal network for longer than anyone remembers, employing ordinary people without many other employment prospects and keeping as many of them as possible in the dark about the true nature of both their work and their employer. Sometimes, someone figures it out and tries to unseat him. Which is fine, until two of his employees--and for some reason an amateur detective--nearly simultaneously get impressively close to managing it.
Oh, well. This might be for the best, really--if he turns them, he'll be able to access their minds. Slowly bring all that energy and intelligence and determination around to working for him, willingly, instead of against him behind his back. Surely if he can control them, they won't present any problems?
London, 1893. A centuries-old vampire just made a really big mistake.
