Rue Bennett has a job, two community college classes, and a relapse she is trying to hide behind the phrase “it’s not pills.”
Maddy Perez has a boyfriend who is nothing like Nate, which would be more comforting if that were not the lowest bar ever dragged across California.
They were never friends. They just lived through same high school, the same parties, the same play, and the same intervention where Rue threw Cassie’s secret like a grenade and Maddy happened to be standing closest to the blast.
Now they’re twenty-one, back in East Highland, and both calling themselves better.
This goes about as well as expected.

Summary
The plot revolves around Rue’s relapse after Jules left. Maddy finds Rue barely breathing on a bathroom floor at a party days after Jules’ departure. Consequently, Maddy and Rue’s mother send her to rehab, which makes her hate them. It’s been a couple of months since the incident, and now Rue is finally getting out of rehab.

“Since when are you and Maddy that close?” She raises her eyebrow in complete disbelief.
“Who’s Maddy?” Rue is clearly equally confused.
“The girl you were bumping and grinding with on stage less than thirty seconds ago….ring any bells?”
“Oh, I don’t know her at all. She’s hot, so I invited her up.” Rue shrugs nonchalantly, but the way Lexi is reacting raises some alarms. “Wait, do you know her?”
“Everyone but you does, Rue. She's probably the one of the most successful actresses in the last five years.” Lexi is rubbing her temples now, it’s not an uncommon sight when she’s conversing with her closest friend.
“Oh.” Is all Rue can muster up, and then— “Does that mean you have her number?” Her lopsided grin punctuates the sentence.
Lexi looks back up at Rue in disbelief. “Kill me now.”

Summary
Rue smiles but pulls Maddy behind the counter and toward the back where the cameras are. The set up is simple.
“It was shit back here but I cleaned it up as best as I could.” Rue explains. “Apparently, the old man used to chill back here before he got too old and then died.”
Maddy gasp and take a step back in horror, “He died back here?”
Rue smirks, “No. At home in his bed.”
“Oh.” Maddy replies but she still looks around in disgust.
Rue snorts, “It’s either this or your car.”
Maddy rolls her eyes.
“I got this.” Rue shows a firestick. “We can watch project runway.”
Maddy lips curve up and look Rue up and down who is wearing a pair of loose jeans, the latest Jordans, and an oversized shirt. “You watch project runway?”
Rue roll her eyes, “No. But, it’s been trending so…”’ She shrugs. “…maybe you’ll learn a thing or two.”
Maddy roll her eyes but finally move to the couch. “Whatever.”
Rue doesn’t hide her smile.
