Summary
She started to recognize it as a constant, something she would always expect to see on Celine’s face when she often grew quiet towards her, and Rumi couldn’t figure out why. She was right there, wasn’t she? How could Celine look at her like she missed her, like she didn’t know where she went, when she never left her? It was in the way she sighed, exasperated, as Rumi stumbled on the same sequence for the fifth time, tripping over her own feet and falling hard onto her forearms as her practice staff flew into the surrounding trees.
Celine loved her, but she didn't want her.

Rumi is eleven, and she realizes just how short her lifespan will be. Rumi is going to die young, just like her mother, because she is a demon. She is both demon and hunter, predator and prey, and there is no possible way she will get to grow old.
