Summary
Lewis had brought a blanket, laid it out against the hot sand, and relaxed. Charles had rolled up his trousers— an awful pair of baggy light blue jeans, but he seemed happy wearing them, so Lewis didn't comment. Charles was standing in the sea, water halfway up his shins, head tilted back with his eyes closed as the sun beat down on him. He lifted up his arms, spread wide, and took in a deep breath. Lewis watched, saw the way the stress melted away, saw a side of Charles he had never intended to see.
Yet there they were. In the middle of nowhere in America. On some random tiny beach. Just the two of them, the secrets they held, and the need to get away from it all.

Christmas is not Charles’ favorite time of the year.
It’s not like he hates it. He doesn’t mind the festivities; he enjoys the food and the music and the mistletoe as much as the next person. It’s just. It feels hollow. This time of the year is when the carved out spaces in his heart —left by the people he misses— hurt the most. When the empty spaces around the table feel the most empty. Every sparkle of the tree is a bit of an insult, a bit of a reminder of all the light he no longer has. 'Tis the damn season.
