Dazai gave her a look like he didn’t believe that for a second.
Then, quietly, flatly: “He’s taken, you know.”
Higuchi’s eyes widened. “Wait—what?”
Dazai stared at her, like he was waiting for something.
“I mean—yeah, okay. I guess I kind of thought maybe you liked him,” he said, blinking slowly. “And I just wanted to make it clear. You’re not subtle.”
There was a pause.
And then—Higuchi started laughing.
It wasn’t cruel, or even loud. It was startled.
“Oh my god,” she said. “You thought I—?”
Dazai squinted. “Did I misread that?”
“Yes,” she said immediately. “You really did.”
He frowned. “I’m not sure I believe that.”
“Well,” she said, still kind of laughing under her breath, “I’m not sure I care.”
