The room dropped into a calm, blue dark. He could hear her breathing, soft and steady. At one point, her foot brushed against his calf, and he froze like he’d been shocked. She didn’t move again, already drifting.
She was asleep fast — something about this place still worked on her. Robby tried to relax, shifting from one side to the other, never quite finding peace. Eventually, he rolled to face her, watching the curve of her shoulder under the blanket. The quiet in the room felt heavier than it had in months.
