Summary
She squirmed partway out of her sleeping bag and inched toward him, frowning as he stiffened. The summer night had grown progressively chillier as she soldiered into the wee hours of the morning, the last of the day’s lingering warmth slipping quietly away.
Anna picked up a spare blanket and carefully pulled it over Hiccup’s sleeping form, tucking it around him gently enough not to wake him. He seemed to relax, melting into his bedding and letting out mellower breaths.
Anna sat and watched him for a long time. Inhale, exhale. Tufts of bangs fluttering up with every puff of air. Shifts and shuffles what felt like every five minutes, because even in his sleep Hiccup couldn’t stay still.
Eventually, most of his hair stopped being in blowing range and settled into a silly-looking cloud over his eyes. Anna fought the urge to brush it away.
She was whipped, and it was becoming a concern.
After the rest of her friends doze off, Anna is left alone with her thoughts. She comes to an overwhelming realization.

“You really should be more careful who you put your trust in. People often aren’t what they seem.”
“Yeah…like you.” Rapunzel took a step back, frowning. “I think I’m already telling you too much. Why are you so concerned with me, anyway?”
She wanted to slap herself. Familiarity be damned, it had been stupid to trust a wolf.
“Just giving some friendly advice,” he replied evenly. He started to back away toward the treeline, keeping his blue gaze fixed on her. “Naiveté is kind of a sad way to go. You have to watch your back out here. There’s plenty of monsters who’d just as soon use you for their own ends, Rapunzel. Sometimes when you’re that eager to see the best in everyone, you don’t realize how knee-deep in a mess you are until it’s too late.”
“Wait.” Rapunzel froze, the full weight of the wolf’s words dropping on her. “How do you know my name?”
Ever the dutiful daughter, Rapunzel agrees to make a delivery to someone her parents owe an old favor. But she knows she must beware, for many dangerous creatures roam the heart of the forest.
Perhaps even the ones that once claimed her best friend.

She tenses against him, sliding her hand out of his hair. Suddenly she’s looking at the snowy concrete, unable to meet her boyfriend’s eyes. “Why do you always say it like that?”
“Say it like what?”
“Like…like loud like that. So like…any old person can hear.”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“Aren’t you embarrassed?” She finally looks up, grimacing slightly. “I mean—well, it’s just—I guess I wonder—aren’t I embarrassing?”
Anna should be having a good time. She has the boy of her dreams, a dynamic friend group, and all the mozzarella sticks she could possibly want. Not that any of that stops her insecurities from rearing their ugly heads...at her new boyfriend's birthday dinner, no less.
Luckily, Hiccup has no plans of leaving her to face her demons alone.

“You’re the rock and I’m the lichen.”
As soon as he says it he realizes how stupid it sounds. Anna snorts, rolling her eyes.
“Oh, come on! I mean sure, I’m the secretly super tough one who everyone overlooks because I seem all ordinary and boring, but you’re too pretty to be lichen.”
“I’m many things, Anna, but I assure you I’m not pretty.”
“You’re more like moss,” she declares, ignoring the assessment.
Hiccup gives her a baffled look. “Moss?”
“Y’know. Adaptable, resilient, super tough. But also really pretty. You see it and you’re like…calmed. It’s like ‘oh, okay, there’s moss here, everything’s going to be fine.’ Like if you go somewhere and there’s a bunch of moss it feels like it can’t be so bad. I guess in some weird, primordial, ancient way, you kind of feel like you’re…home?”
Hiccup's in an embarrassing predicament. His best friend (who he's totally not crushing on or anything) is deadset on making it better, even if her reassurance tactics don't make a lot of sense sometimes.

Summary
Picture this: Anna, age 16, invited to a party by the jerkwad senior who played her the fool, decides she might as well get one last hurrah out of it and shows up dressed as the blueberry girl from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
Meanwhile Hiccup, who technically did not lie about getting on the college football team like his dad wanted, was only allowed invite to the party under the condition that he came dressed as his one and only role on the team: the mascot.
Stage set. Aaaaand action.
So a grape and a furry meet at a frat party....
