Summary
Ono Kensaku, Nagisa and Karma’s first teacher, had always favored Karma for his smarts. The boy's intelligence meant higher pay and reputation for himself, any teacher would protect a student like that. He quickly learnt that Karma was untrusting, smart too, he wouldn't fall for tricks easily but everyone had something. Karma's something became clear when Ono realized there was never a parent for teacher conferences.
“I'm with you a hundred percent, Mr. Akabane. Yes you've had problems, yes you have issues respecting authority, but you're absolutely in the right, not a question. And I stand by you”

Or the real reason Karma got low grades on the test. Ono was the test administrator and it brought up bad memories for Karma.
