Nico woke up in a chapel with his mother's kind smile greeting him. It was a Sunday like any other Sunday. Maria held his hand and home was supposed to be so close as they walked along the familiar street.
As the snow fell on their path, Nico chased his mother's shadow. He didn't see the faces of passing people, couldn't make out the water's song.
And then, his father was standing behind them.
"Your home isn't that way," he said.
And Nico stopped before he knew.

Hades' expression softened, turning into something more understanding, as he looked up, and Nico couldn't help but make note of the rawness present in Hades' eyes, like a wound, long-closed-over, had been reopened by Nico's words, "I did", he choked out, before collapsing onto his throne, as if those words had taken all his strength. The sounds of the dead seemed louder then, filling the empty gap between their words, as it filled the gaping void in Hades' heart.... and, once, had filled Nico's"
