A little coiled up serpentine body rested on the floor, so small in the dimly lit building that he thought it was a child’s jacket or shirt. It started writhing when he stepped towards it, its scales finally reflecting the light as it moved out of the shadows. A rattle started going off, and a black and tan pattern emerged when Iruka stepped a bit too close.

“Why am I hearing gossip about how you’ve been hanging around that Kyuubi kid from the raddish lady?” Mizuki asked once he came home.
Iruka looked up from the rice she was trying to cook. Last time she’d walked away and gotten distracted, so they’d been forced to scrape blackened rice out of the pans. Now Iruka made a point of staying to watch it cook.
She shrugged, lifted the lid to stir the rice, then lowered the flame to simmer. “Well, you haven’t been around for a while. Mizuki, can you believe this, I saw people trying to swindle him from what little money he gets as an orphan. Someone tried to charge him twice the regular cost for some rice.”
