Padme’s upset only grew. “I can’t believe it has come to this. Chancellor Palpatine is one of my oldest advisors. He served as my ambassador when I was Queen, he was one of my mentors growing up...but it has become increasingly clear that the Chancellor has become an enemy of democracy.” She said with grief written on her face.
“How can we be assured that whoever takes the office will serve in the interests of democracy? How can we be certain that they will give up their emergency powers when the time is right?” Senator Taneel spoke up, doubtful of the whole plan. “Even if there was a way to remove the Chancellor from office, surely there is no one in the Senate who we can trust with this much power.”

Watchmen patrol the entrances and exits to the small ward, in case anyone gets any clever ideas about slipping out of the city by nightfall, but what would be the point? Most tracker chips are set to detonate a mile out from Mos Espa city limits. The enterprising would simply dig them out, but the chips are migratory and move throughout the body over the years; you’d have to be very lucky, or your chip defective, to be able to suddenly feel it under the skin of your neck or leg or wrist one day.
Still, most every slave Shmi knows has a habit of running their hands up and down their limbs whenever they have a moment’s rest. Searching, always searching, consciously or not. Waiting for some lucky day when they feel it, the way an expectant mother might anxiously wait for her baby’s kicks. But with Anakin, Shmi never waited, nor was there any anxiety. She felt him from the very first weeks, dancing in her belly until the very last days of her pregnancy. Even then, she was not worried. He was born early, but that’s Ani- impatient, always so impatient, restless and impulsive, and never, ever, tired, even when night comes.

And just for a moment the haze lifts and she lets herself consider it. So many times already she’s been, not even tempted, but outright propositioned by fate. They did really want to change the constitution to let her stay in office, and although it was never as grand as he seems to think, she never let it get past a half serious proposition, it had felt like a test. She still isn’t sure if she hasn’t failed it, because as much as she’d never admit it, “commitment to democracy” was nothing more than a catchphrase she used to push the idea away. In reality after most of a decade as queen Naboo had started to feel provincial and insignificant. She wanted more, she wanted real change. “Real power” a voice would whisper in her ear sometimes, and she’d squash it down or drown it out but it has been getting louder, impossible to ignore since he’d come back into her life. It’s so easy to imagine it. Who could stop her with him at her side? Who could ever say no to him? Or maybe that’s just her. Maybe she’s just weak.
What if Padme was a tiny bit more unhinged and it saved the galaxy
