Summary
“Can you get me some weed?” She asks, and to his credit, Tommy just raises his eyebrows. “Or some vodka, I think, but weed, preferably.”
Tommy takes a deep breath, and afraid of a no, she speaks again.
“Not a lot!” She reassures him. “Just like-” She gestures with her hands to indicate the amount she saw someone else carrying to Gail’s house when she was spying to get some intel earlier. “Like that much.” She might need more later, but if the lady’s studied how to fix brains, surely she’ll be able to do it pretty quickly. Ellie might be fucked up more than other kids her age, but she can’t be the most fucked up person in Jackson. Just statistically, other people have had more time to get more fucked up. She’s probably barely even fucked up, comparatively. Freaked up, really, if anything.
That’s what she’s been desperately telling herself, at least.
(after accidentally hurting joel, ellie decides to get help to make sure she won't ever do it again) (now if only that help wasn't gail)

Summary
With a house so big, it seems like a waste to not use all of it.
Which is why she starts deliberately making an effort to spend time in the parts of it she and Joel don’t use often. The linen closet, the dining room, the two spare bedrooms, what Joel says used to be an office, even the attic, nothing gets untouched on her quest to make sure no inch of the house goes unappreciated. She always does it when Joel is out of the house, knowing that it’s a little strange, but she gets a thrill from it, the ability to think something like, “I’m in the spare bedroom of my house right now” and know that it’s not just a fantasy anymore.
And if it would likely set her up to have Joel call her a weird kid again, this new little hobby of hers, well.
What Joel doesn’t know won’t get her roasted.

Summary
“It doesn’t feel real,” Ellie says that night, when his patience with the Fireflies has broken, and he’s enforced a bedtime for their labrat that involved bodily shoving medical staff out of the room and slamming the door in their faces.
From his place on a cot right in front of the door to make sure no one gets ideas about coming in without warning, he looks over to her, but she’s only looking at the ceiling, looking far too small in the hospital bed she’s been settled on. They’d had her hooked up to machines at first, but she’d been unable to settle with them on her, so he’d made the executive decision to unhook her from everything, pushing buttons at random until all of the noises stopped.
He’d gotten dirty looks through the little window into the room until he’d shut the blinds.

Summary
For all the jokes she’s made about Joel’s name twin, on the day Joel Hendrix is brought back beaten and bloody in a body bag, Ellie isn’t feeling very light-hearted.
Especially when the body is followed by his sobbing daughter, only a year older than Ellie herself. She keeps her eyes on Tanner as she staggers by, held up by Tommy, who was sent out on the rescue patrol to bring the Hendrixes back after they broke protocol and split from their group to go after an elk and then failed to check back in.
Apparently they found something significantly worse than a lucky hunt in the middle of winter.
(what if the fireflies killed the wrong joel?)
