Summary
The building is fifteen stories and remarkably quiet. His own apartment is on the tenth floor. He comes here to eat (usually take-out) and sleep (on a bare mattress on the floor) and sit in the quiet hours where it isn’t really acceptable to be doing anything else. As he’s waiting for the elevator doors to open he hears a door behind him and the jingle of keys. It’s rare that someone is leaving at the same time he is but he doesn’t pay it much attention. The doors open, he steps inside, and turns.
She’s locking the door to her apartment (he never bothers), and glances over her shoulder at the open elevator. He’s not sure exactly what it is that makes him do it. In a lot of ways she’s unremarkable; pale skin, long brown hair. She’s wearing glasses (gold) and a jacket (green). He doesn’t look at her and see a threat, just a young woman like any other in the city. But something makes him reach out a gloved hand, and catch the elevator door as it starts to close.
