Summary
His mother stared at him, wide eyed and more than a little panicked. "Shane, honey, what do you remember?"
He searched his mind for a memory of this game, of the injury - but nothing came to him. The pain worsened, and he groaned, clutching his head. Fuck, that hurt.
"Shane, is okay. Don't hurt yourself more, please." Rozanov said. He moved his hand towards Shane's, trying to grasp hold of it.
Shane swatted him away violently, aghast. What the fuck was he playing at?
"Get the fuck off of me, Rozanov."
Both Rozanov and his mother gaped at him.
"Shane-" Rozanov tried again, but Shane wasn't having it.
He was beginning to panic. It was too much; the too-bright blue lights, his mother's panic, the constant beeping of the monitor, the big gaping whole in his memory, the godawful scratchy feeling of the cheap fabric of the hospital gown - it was all making him lose his fucking mind because it was making him itch and too hot and - and worst of all, Ilya fucking Rozanov was trying to hold his hand and call him sweetheart in front of his mom.
(post-book one, shane gets injured & forgets ilya)

He sits for a while, not long, but long enough that he thinks he has finally worked up the energy to actually leave… when he hears his name being called. Ilya turns to see the same doctor that had come to Shane’s room jogging towards him, a serious but also concerned look on her face. “Hey, wow… I’m so glad you haven't left yet!” She was out of breath, and panting as she came to a stop beside him. “Can you, uh… Can you come back up, please?”
“Come back up?” Ilya repeats. “Why? What for?”
“That I am not at liberty to discuss with you… but I’m sure Mr. Hollander will once you're back in his room.”
orrrrrrrrr! a surprise cryptic pregnancy to make Shane's accident so much more dramatic! :)

“Hey, Hollander, did you see the news about Rozanov?”
Shane’s head snaps up and he almost gives himself whiplash. It’s deja vu, and it throws him back to that moment last season when Ilya’s father passed and he went MIA. His teammates had speculated, but Shane had known the truth – Ilya’s father had passed and he’d flown back to Russia to take care of family matters.
“No?” He states simply, because he doesn’t trust his tongue to not betray him. What could Ilya possibly have done that would get him on the news?
A phone is passed over, and Shane squints against the light and the tiny font of the news article. In big, bold letters the title reads ‘HOCKEY STAR ILYA ROZANOV SEVERELY INJURED IN CAR CRASH.’ It’s accompanied by a generic picture from the Boston news channel, but Shane doesn’t scroll down any further. He can’t. He doesn’t think his brain is capable of any thoughts currently. The phone drops out of his shaking hand and he realizes belatedly that tears are blurring his vision.
“I gotta go.”
