Summary
“I told you to be careful,” Lee says quietly, after two more chips of glass have been dropped onto the tailgate. She says the words quickly, almost as though she can’t help herself. Like while Jessie has been working to keep herself from screaming, Lee has been trying to force this down too. “I told you to pay attention.”
The ache in Jessie’s jaw matches the one in her knuckles, all of it pulsing in time to the heartbeat throbbing on her face. “I know,” she grits out.
And it’s true. Lee had. Of course she had.

Summary
Halloween has always reminded her of Grace. Even when they were little, Grace thrived under the pretense of dressing up, of getting to inhabit someone else’s skin, if only just for the night. They’d spend hours trick-or-treating, piling up their candy on Grace’s bedroom floor afterward, dividing and swapping and eating until their stomachs rounded and their heads buzzed with sugar and they fell asleep on the bedroom floor with some cheesy 80s movie on the TV.
Now Grace is dead and it’s no longer Halloween but Ellie can’t pull herself from the memories, from the certainty that the ghost that waits for her in the darkness wears her friend’s face.

Summary
Chrys hasn’t felt like something is watching her, the way she had after Grace had blown that whistle. She no longer feels like there’s someone else lurking around, a shadow with her face, waiting to pounce, to finish what had been started twice before.
But that doesn’t mean it’s still not the first thing she looks for when she opens her eyes in the middle of the night.

Summary
Chrys frowns, reaching into her pocket, tightening her hand around the artifact. The carved grooves press into her skin, like teeth. It’s one thing to contemplate Mrs. Raymore’s words when thinking about her own death, that lurking figure she’s more and more certain she’d seen last night in the trees after all. It feels entirely different to think about Ellie calling death toward her, not when she seems like the most alive person Chrys has ever known.

Summary
Chrys thinks she could easily just stay here all day, just like this, kissing Ellie and being kissed and wondering how the soft brush of thumb against the nape of her neck makes her want to melt into a puddle on the floor.

Summary
Even before, Mallory was the only person she could stand being close to. Not her mother, who wanted to fidget and pick at her, her worry manifesting itself in her need to fix and fuss. Not her father, who seemed worried about how to hug her in a way he never had before. Not her sister, who had been so reluctant for so much as a high five that her darting, abrupt attempts at an embrace had made Kate flinch. Now, when Mallory holds her, palm pressed to the curve of her spine, it’s not Martin she thinks of.

Summary
Stevie turns around, surprised, but on some level recognizing and placing and slotting the voice into its space in her heart long before her brain connects those pieces. “Ava," Stevie manages, coughing around the exhale of her smoke. Thankfully, she holds her ground, keeping her expression cautiously incredulous rather than teary. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
It must sound thrilled and shocked rather than accusatory, because Ava grins and laughs, sauntering across the creaking dock in her direction. “It’s Thanksgiving, didn’t you know?” She teases.

Summary
“I’m serious, Ava,” Danica protests and despite the muffled nature of her voice, she sounds like she means it. “I’m staying right here for at least the next twenty-four hours. I’m not risking it. No way.”
Honestly, Ava isn’t entirely sure why she’s even bothering to argue. If she had any sense, she’d probably still be in bed beside Danica, fully on board with her plan to leave bed only for takeout and matcha. But she’s not sure it could ever be said that Ava Brucks has good sense.

Summary
Stevie’s eyebrows lift in surprise and Ava flashes a quick uptick of lips that might pass as a smile, giving a quick wave like they’re near perfect strangers thrown together by a well meaning teacher’s group project or because they need someone to sit with in a crowded cafeteria. And maybe that’s what they are, after all, strangers with a shared history made all the more complicated by murder.

Summary
Ava’s expression finally shifts toward something less than confident, the edges of her mouth tightening. “I’m actually heading back to New York tomorrow morning. I wanted to say goodbye and maybe grab a coffee or something?”
“Sure,” Julie says lightly, shrugging as she turns toward the teacher’s desk to gather up her things, “but the coffee in the student center is pretty shitty.”
“Well, how’s the company, at least?”
Julie slips her bag over her shoulder, fixing Ava with what she hopes is a breezy, unbothered expression. “Considerably better, I hope.”

Summary
Her finger presses against the glass, skin whitening with the force of her touch, as though she can push through it and to him and that moment. “Don’t worry,” she whispers to Sam, who smiles back at her. “I’m almost done. I’ve almost got them all.”

Summary
The thing is, Ava knows talking is exactly what she should be doing. Not with Tyler, maybe, but with Danica surely, those unanswered texts burning a hole in her pocket via the screen of her phone. And with Milo, Stevie, Teddy, all of them. For the past year, all she’s wanted has been to talk about the one thing she swore she never would, with the people she didn’t know how to pretend around.
But, the thing is, she’s gotten pretty good at not talking.

Summary
“Thanks for checking on me. I’m…I’m just really honored you would come back to Southport for me. Again.” Ava manages to make it sound almost like she’s teasing Julie, somehow making light of the situation, when really she feels a little bit like crying.
Julie nods, squeezing her hand. “Of course. I’m here, I mean it. And tell Danica too. I’m here for both you.”
“Like my trauma-bonded sister?” Ava smirks.

Summary
The morning summer sun is sharp and Ava pulls down her sunglasses as she watches Danica. Everything has felt so bright recently. Too bright, too loud, too much to think about. She keeps waiting for things to start to return to normal but Ava isn’t entirely sure she’s certain what the normal is. Weeks ago? Before last summer? Before that even? She isn’t sure what part of her life she’s supposed to be yearning to get back to.

Summary
As of late, Lori Granger has been seriously questioning her judgement. Why else would she think it was a good idea to nominate herself for prom queen? Or spend more and more time with Melissa Mckendrick?
And, honestly, Lori isn't sure which decision is going to be worse for her health.

Summary
“You want to go to prom?”
Sam just grins at her, like this is a perfectly normal thing to say to someone. And, probably, it is. Deena had just never imagined it would be a normal conversation for them.
“Yeah. Don’t you think it would be fun?”
“Prom? Really? That thing that killed those kids a few years ago?”
Now it’s Sam’s turn to scoff, to roll her eyes. “I don’t think prom killed them.”
“Do you really want to take any chances?”

Summary
The sound of Nina’s laugh warms Clover up inside, all the way from her toes to the top of her head, but in the wake of it comes the cold, the same empty chill that she’s felt since leaving Glore Valley, since long before that if she was being completely honest. The laughter fizzles in her throat, choking up with a suddenness that leaves her reeling and she blinks, staring at Nina.
Nina’s own laughter stops, her face gentling, eyes softening. “I know,” Nina says softly, moving closer to Clover. “I know.”

“Go away, Lottie. I don’t want to talk about it.”
She knows without even turning around. Can tell from the sound of the footsteps, that weird whisper of them that seems so perfectly to match all of Lottie these days.
And just as she’d known it was Lottie there in the entryway without needing to turn around, Nat knows too that she hasn’t left.

Summary
Lee doesn’t say anything, figures she isn’t expected to anyway. She just sits, waiting. She doesn’t know how to ask the right questions to make someone feel comfortable sharing the darkest things they see in their mind. Doesn’t know how to find the words to explain all the things she sees, the nightmares and memories just another one of those unspoken side effects of doing what they do. It’s easier to pretend that the walls she puts around herself work.
