Summary
It’s the spring of ‘97 when Michael Robinavitch is dragged into a gay bar for the very first time.
When he meets Jack Abbot there, the two of them are on the cusp of radically different futures: Robby is about to begin his residency, and Jack is leaving for the army. They know better than to get attached - know the timing is wrong, the goodbye inevitable - but something tender takes root anyway. Through every deployment, Jack thinks of Robby more than he ought to; through every failed relationship, Robby wonders about what might've been.
Years later, when their paths cross again at PTMC, the past resurfaces — and though they’re older, more jaded, and scarred in different ways, they find themselves pulled towards everything they left unfinished.

“You should know better than to leave your door unlocked at night,” Jack says in lieu of a greeting as he toes off his shoes in Robby’s entryway, probably arriving no more than twenty minutes after Robby.
“Figured you wouldn’t be far behind me. You never know when to leave well enough alone.” Robby replies from the kitchen.
OR
At the end of the Pitt Fest Nightmare Shift, Jack follows Robby home. They fall apart and fall together once more.

'There was no formal arrangement, nothing that could easily be defined as any recognizable brand of relationship. But Jack learned in the army that sometimes you needed someone to hold. To remind you that you’re human. That there’s someone who cares. Not that either of them would say anything mushy like that. It was basically a business transaction. Sleep in each other’s beds a couple nights a week and in exchange make it to the following week without going off the deep end. Business.'
