Summary
This is for Michelle's birthday. The request (a million years old at this point) was for an attempt at a Barbler fic, although I knew from the start that it would have to be Barson in the end. I'm not sure I did the idea the justice it deserves but I took a crack at it ;) I also really needed a beta this time around more than ever before but of course I ran out of time, because I'm nothing if not an expert procrastinator.
Post-Undiscovered Country.

Summary
The parents never quite understood how much easier it all was once they left the room.
Not that he was eager to chase away this particular parent. Mr. Barba seemed intent to look just about everywhere but at Sonny, turning startling green eyes and razor sharp attention to the art on the walls, the line of cubbies with hooks beneath them, the vat of legos Chris and Natalie had just managed to dump out all over the floor. Sonny cleared his throat and held out his hand.
“Nice to meet you Mr. Barba, my name is Sonny. I'm the lead teacher here in the EPK room. EPK all the way,” he added from rote, his fists shaking in the air above his head in the mock cheer he was always trying to get the kids to copy. Sonny was babbling, and treating a full grown man like a toddler.
Sonny was in trouble.

Summary
“Murder mystery?” Rafael repeated, glaring at him. “You’ve got to be kidding me, Sonny.”
“It won’t be that bad,” Sonny assured him. “It’ll mostly just be at dinner the first night, where we get to find out all the details about whoever was murdered, the different roles that people are playing, and so on.”
“Oh goody,” Rafael said dryly. “Dinner theater.”
Or, Rafael and Sonny take a trip upstate for a long weekend and get far more than they bargained for.

When Rafael is attacked and nearly assaulted, Sonny and the squad band together to take care of their ADA and carry him through to the end of his own case.

“Are you angry?”It’s a simple question without a simple answer, at least not for Rafael.
“I’m disappointed,” he eventually settles for saying. It’s as close to being able to describe what he’s feeling about the entire situation as he can get. “But none of them were exactly willing participants. They aren’t the villains here.”
“They had choices,” Sonny says bluntly. Rafael smiles a little at the gruffness in his tone.
“Yes,” he agrees, “but if someone held your well-being over my head, I’d do just about anything, too.”
