At least if they hated him, they’d still care. But this was an isolation he hadn’t been ready for, not after the weeks of the lawsuit, being on his own and unable to talk to anyone. And now he was sitting at the table for dinner but feeling unmistakably on the outside, looking in at the love they all shared as if behind glass, able to see it but never feel it, never touch it, never taste it. Watching warmth while out in the cold.
So it didn’t fully surprise him when he first started thinking about not waking up.

When Eddie leaves it’s not grandiose or dramatic. Eddie hugs him and Buck hugs him back, of course.
He hides his face in the curve of Eddie’s neck and breathes in the scent of him, of pinewood and soap.
Eddie’s fingers dig in his back, and he prays they might leave marks behind, scratch Eddie’s signature right into his skin, prays they might leave bruises on his very bones, let him keep Eddie right here, in his arms, forever.
But eventually, gone as all good things do, Eddie pulls back. He smiles, and his eyes are a storm, warm honey clouded with lightning and thunder, and the only thing Buck can do is smile back. He’s never been good at goodbyes, he should be used to them. He isn’t.
And then, just like that, Eddie’s gone, taking with him half of Buck’s heart and all the oxygen in his lungs.OR Eddie leaves, and Buck sinks and sinks and then, eventually, he remembers how to swim
