Summary
Stella rolls her eyes. “I didn’t say you needed to start dating. I said you need to find a boyfriend.”
She’s lost.
Her best friend brings the glass to her lips. “Ever seen a romcom?”
Stella’s idea dawns on Sylvie. She sees where she’s going with this.
She sits up, grabbing her own half empty glass of rose. “You mean bring a fake boyfriend? Are you insane?”
“I’m problem solving,” she retorts. “Bringing a guy protects your lie and makes you look good to your terrible ex.”
It would but it’s also damn near impossible. That whole notion is all fiction. This kind of stuff happens in movies, not real life.

Summary
“Coming.” She crosses the wood floors towards the foyer. She undoes the latch. The door swings open from the wind.
Her whole-body stills, breath hitching in surprise at who is tucked under her porch.
“Casey,” his name leaves her lips like a whisper.
Matt Casey is on her front porch. Strands of his hair are pasted against his forehead, and his clothes are dripping wet from the rain.
“Hi,” he says.
She doesn’t understand. He shouldn’t be here. He’s supposed to be in Chicago, at Molly’s with everyone else.
He’s not supposed to be here.

Summary
She scans the article’s contents. It discusses how some bystander photographer snapped a photo of two first responders clearly partaking in a forbidden in-house romance behind the fire captain’s wife’s back.
“A torrid affair?” She reads aloud. “They think we’re cheating together?”
“That’s not even the worst of it,” Violet says. “It has practically caught fire on social media.”

Summary
“I got hitched.”
Matt drops the trash can. There is no way Severide is serious right now. Sure, he’s been a goddamn mess since Shay died but this is bringing a whole new level to fuck ups.
“You didn’t.”
Severide winces. “I did.”
Fuck, this is a disaster.

Summary
“Chief, what’s going on?” Stella’s voice echoes from somewhere behind him. Her tone has an edge. “Is Brett with the doctors?”
He’d like to know that too. He’s tired of being in the dark. Sylvie’s the woman he loves. They practically live together. He wants definitives. He knows she lost blood, but no one’s told him how much or from where.
“I’m going to find a doctor,” Matt says.
“Casey, you can’t go back there,” Boden says.

Summary
“Lucy almost died,” he says, his voice low and dangerous. It sends chills down Lucy’s spine, and she bites her lip to keep from making noise as he continues. “And nothing short of the person responsible losing their job and dealing with me is going to be a good enough recourse for that. So get out of my way and let me put the fear of god into whoever failed to properly warn us that we were walking into a fiery inferno. Got it, boot?”
Seth whimpers and takes a step backward, his eyes wide.
“Yes… y-yes, sir!”

Summary
She didn’t remember a lot of what she did after getting home from her shift. The last clear memory was her meeting with her chief. Now that she had officially hit the end of her first 6 months with Portland Fire and Rescue, she could be considering for internal job postings. Chief Grier wanted to make sure that Sylvie not only knew that, but registered for the next ambulance commander exam. There was an opening in the Non-Emergent Medicine Unit but they wanted someone who could, at the very least, grow into a promotion. She wanted to talk to Matt about it first so she’d asked how long she could have to make a decision.
“I can give you till the end of next shift. Is that enough time?”
“Plenty,” she replied.
And it should have been.

Summary
He stops dead in his tracks, but not because Brett has apparently broken into his home. He pauses because she called him Matt which she doesn’t do.
It’s not like he has a problem with it, but pretty much everyone at 51 calls him Casey. It’s just become this thing so when Sylvie Brett says it so casually, in his damn kitchen while his marriage crumbles somewhere else…it strikes him.
He’s not even sure she’s ever called him his name before.

Summary
It’s 10 in the morning on a Sunday and somehow Sylvie is still in bed. She wakes up disoriented by how brightly the midmorning sun lights up the bedroom. The daylight is merely slipping through the cracks in the blinds and still no additional lighting is needed. She never sleeps this late. Not since a certain little girl came into her life.
As her eyes blink open she tries to tune her ears to the baby monitor and, simultaneously, the hallway beyond their closed bedroom door. Both are eerily quiet.

Summary
A blush colors Sylvie’s cheeks as she rests her chin on his shoulder and beams up at him. “Too late to back out now anyway. You’re stuck with me.”
“Good,” Matt declares, turning to face her. He pecks a quick and casual kiss to her lips while a low chuckle escapes him. “And I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with you.”
“This is sweet and all and I get the symbolism,” Stella says, smiling warmly at her friends. Matt swears he sees pride and relief in her eyes too and he wonders how hard it was for Kidd to stay out of their relationship even when things looked their darkest. She and Severide don’t like to meddle but he can’t help but wonder about her point of view. “But are you really going to deny your friends and family, and most importantly me, the chance to see Casey’s face when you step into the venue in your wedding dress?”
“Oh come on,” Sylvie says, waving a hand dismissively. “Is that really that big of a deal?”
Stella freezes while consolidating the breakfast dishes and then stares at Sylvie as if she’s lost her mind. “You can’t be serious. Tell me you’re joking.”
Sylvie looks truly clueless. Matt is too, to be honest. “What?”

Summary
Matt is used to letting things go but this one, this thing with Sylvie, he can’t seem to let go and just move on. He honestly doesn’t know if it’s can’t or won’t at this point - maybe it’s a mix of both. He’s thinking of a name for that feeling he gets whenever he thinks of Sylvie. It’s scratching the surface of his brain, he tries to grasp it but it moves just out of reach. All he knows is Sylvie makes him regress to a sixteen year old teenage boy - all sweaty palms, awkwardness and a complete tongue tied mess.

Summary
“Can we talk?”
Sylvie swallows thickly and hopes she imagined Casey asking that question. It’s been hard enough trying to simply live her life in the aftermath of every conversation they’ve had since the kiss. She really doesn’t want any additional difficulty.
But when she looks up from her tablet he’s definitely standing beside the table, watching her expectantly.

Summary
One month after he decided to impulsively propose to Sylvie Brett in the doorway of her apartment, he finds himself waiting for her at the airport baggage claim. Back then he went home the next day, just long enough to arrange for a week of furlough, and then flew straight back. She needed help adjusting to life with Julia whether she admitted it or not so he made sure to show up.
It was an intense week. Adjusting to being back together and co-parents while also figuring out the plan for long distance going forward -- it was a lot.
The first plan they made centered around Ben’s graduation. Upon learning the news of their engagement, Ben’s first request was to make sure Sylvie would be attending. The boys missed Sylvie as much as him.
Now, Graduation weekend is here.
