After Constantinople, Mycroft Holmes returns to London. During his attempts at returning back to the siren calls of normalcy, he is forced to balance a determined Beatrice, a tight-lipped Sherlock, and one infuriating James Moriarty.

Which was absurd, naturally.

As James turns his back, Sherlock is reminded of the form of the Princess. Quickly realising that James may be the key to unlocking his blurred memories, James agrees to help Sherlock recall the events of last night. But all too soon Sherlock begins to notice that in place of Shou’an, a certain stubborn grin takes its place in his mind, and the touch that he craves doesn’t come from tender, soft hands, but rather the ink-stained ones of an all too familiar face.

Darkness had fallen at some point, the fire in the grate providing their only light. Sherlock watches it dance as the silence stretches on expectantly, wondering if it would give him the answers he needed if he could just freeze it in time for a moment.
“It scares me” Sherlock says eventually, keeping his gaze fixed on the fire, not daring to look away. “The enormity of my desire for you.”

James stares at the scrap of paper in his hands. This equation could give him everything he’s ever wanted, everything that Silas had: power, money, security. But what good is any of that to Silas Holmes now as he rots at the bottom of a ravine? James could keep the formula. He would no longer be the poor little boy from Cork, doomed to suffer and wallow in obscurity. He could claw his way to greatness, yet a part of him knows that he will lose Sherlock in the process, no matter how he may try to avoid repeating Silas’s mistakes.
-In an alternate universe, James decides that Sherlock is worth more to him than the formula.

“You need to learn how to stop me from hitting you in the nose.” James grinned.
At their first encounter, Sherlock couldn't stand that grin. Something had seemed off about it. Something Sherlock couldn't quite put his finger on. It was almost as though the other man was trying to show that he was better than Sherlock, smarter than Sherlock. It had intrigued him nonetheless.
He knew one thing for certain now though and it was that he wanted to wipe that smug look clean off his face.

In retrospect, they should have assumed something like this could happen. James will blame himself later on, insisting he should have known that there was a chance this could be a consequence of their involvement in ending Silas’ schemes.
(Sherlock will, of course, tell him it’s not his fault, even as he grimaces in pain while doing so.)
It comes in the form of a package from Sherlock’s mother.
(Or: James and Sherlock are taken by one of Silas’s former partners. Conversations are had, secrets are shared, and revelations come to light. Heavy on the whump.)

Recently, so much that he has trusted to be true, what he had thought to be concrete facts of his life, had suddenly crumpled. His sensitive mother needs medication and constant close watch: false. His father is an upright scientist who loves his family above all: false. His sister Beatrice is dead: false.
Now, that undead sister is feeling up his best mate as they drink each other down like the first drink after a drought.

They could go so far, do anything. But they'd keep themselves in check. They'd be careful.
There'd be no soldiers. No fire. Nothing. James would go back to university and get his mathematics degree, Sherlock would get some kind of a job, they'd rent some rooms, it would be fine. It would have been fine.
James Moriarty and Beatrice Holmes could take over the world. So why does James wish he'd never realised that he was capable of that?

He was frozen in time and space, left wondering if he’d been shown a glimpse of his own future. Silas Holmes had been right to see himself in his youngest son: he too had the capacity to become ruthless and unstoppable.
Or, Sherlock has barely had time to recover from the events in Constantinople when the devil rears his ugly head again and he's forced to reckon with a few uncomfortable truths.
