What's in your inventory?
The last thing D3rLord3 ever said to AveryTheMayo in that world was a question. A distraction. A way to push him somewhere safe before the door closed.
Derek Hutchins wakes up at 3am and cannot convince himself he is real. He presses his hand to his own chest and counts his heartbeat and it doesn't help, and then Avery is there, sitting on the kitchen floor, asking him about chip flavors like it's the most natural thing in the world.
It helps. Avery helps. Derek is slowly, reluctantly, gratefully learning to let him.The next morning Derek tries to make breakfast and sets off the smoke alarm. The eggs are perfect. The toast is a casualty. Everything is fine.

The King is gone. Derek Hutchins is alive, somehow, improbably, stubbornly alive, and Avery is not going to waste that.Recovery is mostly boring. It involves bad hospital coffee, a couch that smells like laundry detergent, breakfast eggs, and a YouTuber who reads academic papers about forbidden knowledge at 2am because he refuses to let Derek be alone in this.
It also, eventually, involves Skywars.

Derek let out a short laugh, tugging Avery closer to him by the arm and bringing their foreheads together with a small sticky sound as slime hit metal.
“Aww,” Avery smiled. “I like when you do that, it’s like when a cat headbutts people.”
“Cats do that as a sign of affection and trust, and to mark territory,” Derek told him.
“Are you marking me as your territory? That’s kinda weird. Instead of D3rlord3 they should call you Fr3aklord3.”

Summary
Derek reads the text fondly, something warm curling in his being, or whatever’s left of it. Despite how little they got to talk in person, Derek remembers everything he learned about Avery. To say he knew him better than he knew himself would be accurate. Derek isn’t sure what’s going on with him in that moment— or more accurately, some part of him knows what’s going on with him in that moment, his mind is currently just too weary to grasp the infinity of it all— but he knows Avery. Avery is familiar.
Avery makes it a little easier to not get lost in his own, untethered head.
d3rLord3: It’s me.
d3rLord3: You found me again. You’re becoming an expert at that.
(Or Avery manages to recover something, or rather someone, from the wreckage of that world. Derek becomes a ghost in the machine and finds he doesn’t mind it.)
