to let your shadow lengthen on the sundials

    Quotes :)
"Alhaitham reads books because even the act of his eyes on a page feels warm, a tingling little sparking sensation he has learned to classify as “joy”"
"but he does not laugh out loud when things are funny, and the stories that run through his head are, apparently, quite strange to the other children."
"He finds theirs boring, in turn–predictable until they aren’t, twisting based on the whims of play instead of what makes a story satisfying to finish."
"The Aranara tell him that he is like a sapling tree, that his mind remembers more than his body, when most Nara are like birds or tigers or fish."
"Alhaitham does not think most of the children his age are at all like birds or fish and definitely not at all like tigers, but he understands there is a point in the differences, so he accepts that this is probably true."
"the building reflecting so much noise that it feels as though the walls themselves shout."
"it was his mother who turned her mind to observing others, and learned better how to align her thoughts along the edges of the world so that she was understood."
"Alhaitham decides early on that he prefers his father’s way–he does not care to exhaust himself for people who would not exhaust themselves for him."
"Even detective novels and poetry and the few story books he reads to the Aranara must follow these rules."
"Alhaitham does not cry. He wonders if the fact his throat burns and his body trembles with the weight of every sound he cannot force out of it is the same thing."
"They both know that no one will ever again be able to understand the things Alhaitham does not say."
"But Alhaitham’s not angry anymore. He’s not lonely, either–the world will never truly understand him, so he steps back to observe. To contemplate. To search for truth."
"He’s getting very good at lying to himself. There is still one person he wishes he belonged to. Anger fades, but longing does not."
"It hurts so much it makes his tongue sharper than he means it to be, makes criticism harsher and tone colder."
"Love makes a fool of wise men, and Alhaitham is no different than any other, in this regard."
"sometimes he catches Kaveh looking at him the way he regards his models or a canvas, eyes brilliant and blazing, and Alhaitham doesn’t think he could feel more exposed if he stripped himself naked there in the living room."
"Kaveh rejects the Diadem, shatters it, rejects Sachin’s very thesis with a blazing fury that outshines the sun."

    Summary

The music from the grand ballroom can still be heard even out at the garden fountains, despite having gone far enough away that the roar of the grand fete's noise has faded to nothing but a distant mumble. Here, the murmur of the fountain replaces the idle chatter of all of Sumeru's elite, and the humming voices of the Aranara that were scattered curiously through Nahida's gardens followed the melody of the orchestra inside.

The Archduke had been told explicitly to not leave the Palace grounds, and then more explicitly to remain within view of the ballroom, and he had obeyed these orders to the letter of them—no one could have reasonably expected any truer obedience from Al-Haitham of all people.

    I love it so much!!
Even if it's not smut, or fluff, I just love it so much! I think it's the flow of the words. It's a great short story! This is how a short story should be written, it's amazing!
