Summary
When presented with Etho, falling down into the mineshaft where Joel was stood, he could not have said he expected the subsequent spark of pain in his knees, perfectly in time with Etho’s instant flinch.
When presented with the concept of soulmates, Joel would not have said he expected Etho. Maybe Grian—or even Jimmy, though he’d never say it aloud—but certainly not Etho, someone he’d only talked to on brief occasions. A friend of a friend, nothing less, nothing more.
That clearly didn’t matter, though, because the world did not care for what he did and did not expect, and Etho was his soulmate.

Summary
Trying to save a stranger on the road was, by all accounts, a bad idea.
Being a good person was not a viable way to survive. This wasn’t an environment where kindness thrived, this was everyone for themselves. Nobody was to be trusted.
But Joel approaches the crumpled body in front of him anyway.
Or; it’s nine years into the apocalypse, and Joel is starting to think that things are never going to change. That is, until change falls at his feet, in the form of his old college roommate.
