Summary
Known as the Jewel of the Vale, Alarra Arryn was the only living heir of Lady Jeyne Arryn and seen by many as a great prize to be one. All of Westeros were therefore both overjoyed and intrigued when King Viserys announced her betrothal to his second son, Aemond Targaryen.
Neither expected, nor wanted the match but both knew what was expected of them – both swearing promises that they could not keep.
Alarra promised to do her duty to her house but promised to protect her heart. She had not expected this, she had not expected him. As she grew to know him, the one-eyed Prince awakened things inside her Alarra could never have imagined, she dared to hope that one day, perhaps, he might come to see her as she saw him…that he could love her too.
Aemond promised to fulfil the expectations of his birth but no more. He would marry Alarra, give her sons, protect the Targaryen dynasty but he could never love her, his heart would forever belong to another and he would not give her up. Aemond could not feel more for Alarra than duty and honour…his kindness would be in not loving her.
Promises that are broken do always mean they were lies - sometimes they are the truth we could not see.
