Summary
Almost three years after the death of her husband, Francesca is officially out of her mourning period and ready for the next phase of her life.
However, despite the urging of her mother, she is in no hurry to return to Mayfair. Instead, she wishes to remain in Scotland with her dear friend Michaela, the newly minted Countess of Kilmartin, and run the estate together, as John would have wished.
But she cannot fathom why, on occasions, she is drawn to Michaela for reasons she cannot quite name. Why sometimes there is a strange intensity between them, a tension that she doesn’t share with anyone else.

Francesca finds that her eyes have already drifted back to her left, back towards Michaela.
“I—” She feels her cheeks paint pink, “Well you should—” She coughs. “Not.”
Michaela just smiles, nonplussed, “I fear your repellant disposition is having the opposite effect, Miss Bridgerton.”
Francesca cheeks redden even further as she rolls her eyes, looking away again, “I told you to—”
“Tell me then, Francesca..” Michaela purrs, turning towards Francesca and stepping closer. Francesca’s neck jerks right back to her at the sound of her voice. Her heels click once, twice. And she teases a small pout, a dangerous gesture indeed, “What mountains must I move to earn favor with you?”
Francesca’s eyes unconsciously fall to Michaela’s lips for a half-second.
And when she looks back up, Michaela's pout transforms into that same damned enigmatic smile.
Holding her gaze steady, seemingly unaffected, Francesca finally suggests,
“Perhaps you can start with Everest.”

Sympathetic resonance is a phenomenon in which a string initially at rest responds to external vibrations that are harmonically similar to its own without direct physical contact. It’s always made sense to Francesca that when she holds down a key on the piano, those with frequencies alike echo and the sound waves continue to ring in the wooden body after the original note has faded away. It’s physics, it’s music theory, it’s perfectly comprehensible.
At least, it had been all of that until she started noticing the sensation within her, the amplified waves crashing through every nerve in reaction to another person. A stranger. Her husband’s cousin. A woman.
