Derek can survive. He can survive and Avery can finally start to pay off the debt he owes the man.
It's a damn good deal. (Too good, a part of his mind whispers. If he knew what Derek's voice sounded like, he thinks it might sound like him.)
Avery cracks his jaw, licks his lips and tries to contort his muscles to properly form the right words. "Whhhhaat dooo I nneed to dddddo?" Somewhat properly. Thankfully, making deals with the devil doesn't need good dictation.
"Glad you can see reason." He feels like The King is smiling at him. The warm brush of a hand on his shoulder urging him forward. "Just repeat after me, and brace for a lot of pain."
Or: Avery would do anything if it meant Derek survives. Even if he loses himself in the process.

AveryTheMayo, or just Avery, traced the lines of the map with a trembling finger. Feeling an almost physical pull toward it. A magnetic tug that pressed against the inside of his chest. He imagined the floors, the corridors stretching into darkness. He couldn’t help but imagine the sterile fluorescent lights humming above.
“How am I going to do this…?” He said outloud.

The ritual didn’t fail. It just didn’t end.
D3rLrd3, or Derek survives, but not in any way that makes sense. Taken by the U.S Department of Metaphysical Sciences, he becomes something they cannot explain. Only contain.
Avery is the only one who notices, the evidence that Derek is still out there. Now he is on the run with someone who knows too much. Remembers things that haven’t happened yet, and isn’t entirely human anymore.
Retrieving him is the easy part.Understanding what came back isn’t. Derek knows how all of this ends.
And he stayed anyway. -
