A loud, high-pitched scream echoes through the halls of the manor and Belly’s blood runs cold.
The gentle clinking of cutlery on china comes to a sudden halt. Nobody dares utter a word as their eyes flick to one another, a silent question filling the room. The sound of footsteps thundering down the stairs penetrates the silence as the young maid comes rushing into the dining room, deathly pale and brown-eyes deranged from fear.

In short, it was specifically designed to go straight to Conrad Fisher’s heart, bypassing his brain and all its honorable intentions completely to settle in that aching cavity above his ribs.
(AU where Conrad never learns about Jeremiah cheating and Belly goes through with the wedding. It lasts about as long as you’d expect.)
