Summary
As Charles had told Edwin in their first meeting, he was aces with people.
The thing was, he had to be, growing up with an abusive dad. So while his peers learned math and how to flirt, and generally how to be a human being, Charles learned how to read people with uncanny precision. It had been a matter of survival, a skill honed under the oppressive weight of his father’s unpredictable anger.

Charles, never one to deny the other man anything, had easily agreed. When he was alive, Charles had always had a hard time sitting still - always tapping his fingers in a rendering of whatever cd he’d listened to last, or swinging his legs around. When he died, the habit didn’t die with him, still lingering now, 30 odd years later.

“Don’t be needy.” Klaus said, kissing his forehead.

Summary
His fingers reach out to graze Jean’s arm, attempting to shock him out of his spiral that Neil knows threatens to creep in. He wants desperately to smooth out the crease between his brows, to draw the larger man into his arms and make sure no one can ever reach him again, to keep him safe in the circle of his protection and pretend the world doesn’t want them dead for things far beyond their control. In moments like this, Jean looks so much older than his nineteen years, scarred by horrors and pain that Neil knows he didn’t deserve, and Neil feels so much younger, frightened and anxious at the prospect of not being able to keep him safe, to hold him close to his chest and never let go.
“You’ll be okay,” he rasps, voice rough like sandpaper grates over each word. “You’ll be okay.”
