Summary
His fingers reach out to graze Jean’s arm, attempting to shock him out of his spiral that Neil knows threatens to creep in. He wants desperately to smooth out the crease between his brows, to draw the larger man into his arms and make sure no one can ever reach him again, to keep him safe in the circle of his protection and pretend the world doesn’t want them dead for things far beyond their control. In moments like this, Jean looks so much older than his nineteen years, scarred by horrors and pain that Neil knows he didn’t deserve, and Neil feels so much younger, frightened and anxious at the prospect of not being able to keep him safe, to hold him close to his chest and never let go.
“You’ll be okay,” he rasps, voice rough like sandpaper grates over each word. “You’ll be okay.”

Charles starts turning himself intangible. Repeatedly. It becomes a problem.
He swings the sword in a circle, like he used to with his bat, to remind himself of how it handles. Edwin’s gaze flicks towards the movement and then lingers, though he keeps his head turned slightly away as if it’s a secret that he’s watching. Charles’s insides leap and on impulse he repeats the move.
The sword clangs on the pavement.
“Butterfingers,” he says as he crouches. Collecting the sword gives him a nice excuse not to look at Crystal, or at Edwin. It’s embarrassing — he’s done that move hundreds of times, with all kinds of different weapons, and he’s never botched it so badly he chucked something on the floor before …

Summary
Neil turned to look out the window, letting the smoke burn through his lungs longer than he should’ve. It hurt; it made him feel real again. He let it out slowly, afraid time might slip away with the exhale, and he’d become this smoke dissipating into the wind once more.
If it were a year ago, he would write this off as his memory being odd. It always had been. Conversations he was present for slipped away, and more than just possessions got lost between the cities they stayed in. If this were a year ago, he’d write the missing hours away because he’d been jumbled and upset, and his mind didn’t always hit the record button for the bad stuff. But he wasn’t just surviving for himself anymore.

“What is it?” Charles asks.
“Hang on,” says Edwin. He flips rapidly through pages of his notebook. He magically extended it a while back, so the bloody thing’s got more than seven-hundred pages full of Edwin’s notes and sketches. It makes for a tense several seconds of flipping.
When he does stop, finding the correct page and holding it open under the light, Charles’ breath catches in his throat.
“Is this her?” Edwin asks urgently.
Edwin’s a damn good artist, even if he insists it’s just a practical thing. He’s captured her likeness shockingly well. Lank hair, full cheeks, sullen pout. Wide, staring eyes.
“Yeah,” Charles breathes. “That’s her. Who is she?”
Edwin is clearly horrified. No, it’s worse than that. Edwin looks scared. Charles’ instincts all kick up into high gear, and he has to clench his fists to resist the urge to simply shove Edwin into his backpack.
“I don’t know,” Edwin says quietly, like he’s afraid of being overheard. “But I’ve seen her.” He hesitates. “In Hell.”Series

Summary
Nothing around him looked wrong, was the thing. Sure, there were some flashy landmarks out of place, but the world overall? Felt the bloody same as usual. He knew this street well — it was one of his favourite routes. A good walk here always helped clear his head after a tricky case or calm him down after a debacle.
Which, coincidentally, was exactly what he needed right now.
After a ritual gone wrong, Charles finds himself in a tight spot. There’s only one place he knows to go for this sort of thing.

Summary
Charles gets dragged to Hell on a foggy Tuesday afternoon in September. Edwin, Crystal, and the Night Nurse retrieve him a few weeks later. Somehow, this is only the prologue of the story.
In the time Charles was gone, something changed. Edwin is different. He’s disappearing off on his own, taking clients he won’t tell Charles and Crystal about, and - every now again - Charles could swear there’s a glint of fire in his eyes, like embers burning in the dark.
Something in Edwin broke when Charles was away. Charles just needs to figure out what it is so he can fix it before it consumes them.

FORTY-YEAR-OLD CASE BELIEVED SOLVED AFTER MURDERER CONFESSES
On Thursday, 23 November 1989, a corpse was discovered in an unused attic at Saint Hilarion’s Catholic boarding school. Exhibiting signs of both hypothermia and internal bleeding, the corpse was immediately identified as Charles Stephen Rowland, a year 12 who had been missing for the past three days. According to testimonies from other pupils at the school, the cause of death was ruled a suicide despite a lack of concrete evidence to prove it so.
However, last Monday (the sixteenth of April), wealthy Chelsea landlord Richard Heyes fell ill and was taken to the Chelsea and Westminster A&E after his wife dialled 999. He was found to have several ruptured brain aneurysms, which he had been aware of but refused to treat due to religious reasons. On his deathbed, he confessed to the 35-year-old murder.
Some suspects in the case have been detained and brought in for questioning about their whereabouts on the night of November 21, 1989. There have been no conclusive results as of yet.
A second funeral ceremony will be held on April 24 at the Brompton Cemetery Green.
Mr and Mrs Paul Rowland have declined comment for the time being.

All he can think is how good Eddie's van would be for puppies. Two velvety blue bench seats behind the driver's and passenger's seats, with enough room between the second bench and the back panel doors for Eddie's nest.
It's just a small round bed walled in by pillows and old leather, but Steve's eyes burn every time he looks at it.
He and Eddie are nowhere near close enough for him to, like, clamber inside and curl down, though. Why would he even want that? Stupid.
