    “Knock Knock.”

Ryland’s gaze was ripped away from the paper planets strung on his ceiling as the woman’s voice echoed through the otherwise empty classroom, sending a sudden chill down his spine. Stratt? He met her eyes from across his desk as she approached with that air of confidence she always had, so sure of herself and her decisions. She had brought with her a small satchel, one that Ryland knew instantly contained a copy of his research paper.
    ...

    How did he know that?

It was the lack of noise that told Courtland Gentry more than anything else that no one was actively trying to kill him at the moment. Had his assailant left him for dead? Didn’t matter, he needed to move no matter what additional pain it woke in his heavy body. Gathering his arms under him, he pushed up—

There was something in his right fist. Taking one last look around the alley to verify no new threats were materializing—Christ, what city was he even in?—he pushed back to sit against the nearest cracked brick wall and uncurled his fingers.

A crumpled yellow sticky note wrapped around a cheap plastic thumb drive lay in his palm.

He unfurled the creased paper and found his own blocky handwriting staring up at him.

"He goes to space. 37 loops and no matter what I do, he always goes to space."

Then, in letters so heavily pressed into the paper the ballpoint had almost torn through it:

    "Save him. Save them both."

    Summary

“I, uh,” Grace let out a nervous little chuckle after a minute or so of silence. “I don’t know why I thought we’d be able to see the stars from here.” The night sky was black and partially cloudy, muted by the lights of the city all around them. Driver had been to places where you could see the real night sky, places where he almost didn’t need his headlights for all the starlight surrounding him. He went to these places when he felt he couldn’t tolerate the presence of another human being ever again, driving aimlessly until it seemed like he had driven away from Earth entirely, a lone astronaut cradled by the universe. It was one of the only times when he felt safe.

Driver turned his head to face Ryland. “View’s nice anyway,” he said, his voice a soft curl in the air, floating above the noise of the city below. Much like in LA, Friday nights in San Francisco were not quiet affairs.

Fluffy drivinglessons oneshot inspired by this writing prompt! -> "We’re lying on a deserted parking level, watching the stars, but we’re in a big city with too much light so we just watch each other."
