"You don't understand," Dean whispers, exhaling shakily. "I know you don't, because even I don't. The instant you were gone, I wanted you back. Cas, I wanted you back. I wanted—I wanted—"
Cas stares at him, searching his face. After a moment, his own face falls slack, eyes widening just so. "Oh," he breathes out.
Dean wants to be furious that Cas has figured it out before he has—whatever it is—but he's not even that surprised. Cas knows him too well, always has, even more than Dean knows himself. He's been kicking Dean in the goddamn teeth with how deeply he understands him, even about the things Dean doesn't, ever since they first met. You don't think you deserve to be saved, that's what Cas had said. All bundled up in impossibilities and power, this being that looked at Dean Winchester and knew every single inch of him, as if he had a right to each part.
"What?" Dean grits out.
"I love you, too."

Mrs. Christian, owner of Lebanon's only grocery store, had once been a perfectly respectable woman. But now here she was, completely invisible, being forced to witness Dean Winchester's love lessons, all in an effort to teach Castiel how to flirt and bed a woman.
“Thank you, Dean,” Castiel said and he looked as thankless as one could be. “For our fake date yesterday. I think I'm ready now. To find a woman...like you want me to.”
"I want you to be happy, Cas," Dean said. "You're human now. Hunting isn't a life."
But oh, how utterly strained and painful his smile looked! And then, Mrs. Christian had an epiphany and her body shuddered with homophobic shock. How had she not seen it before? How had she not noticed how thin their fake-dating pretence was? This godless man, Dean Winchester, was an authentic homosexual, wasn’t he?! He hadn't been pretending!
She lost consciousness at once.

Summary
Dean lays sprawled with him, next to him, his head pillowed on Castiel's stomach.
His hair is soft, feather-soft, where it slides between Castiel's fingers. When his blunt nails press against Dean's scalp, he arches into the touch. Unconscious. Cat-like, almost.
The world is quiet, in this forgotten corner of Indiana. The empty field stretching into the horizon as far as the eye can see. A little farther, it will rise into a cluster of hills and valleys. Somewhere beyond the reach of their beings, there is a river.

Castiel and Dean steal away to snuggle every once in a while and talk about things. Set somewhere after Tombstone and before Byzantium.
